GLENN MARTIN

Author of books that are reflections on experience, or about ethics and values,
the “big picture”, family history, and collections of poems.

Early 2025: I have written a book about the I Ching called A Singular Book of Great Esteem. Who is the “target audience”? My answer? Intelligent, curious adults. Details are on the Big Picture page.

A new family history book is available (as of late 2024), in both paperback and ebook versions: The Sailor, The Baron And The Dressmaker. In July 1939 a German sailor, newly arrived in Australia, met and married one of my father’s cousins, in less than six weeks. See the Family History page for more about the book.

The book release was held on 30 November 2024 at the Sydney Mechanics School of Arts in Sydney. It was an enjoyable event. Thanks to all those who came and who offered support.

My previous book, in early 2024, was Library Meets Book Fair. Read more.

Glenn also released a book in October 2023, called Travel with a Pen. He travelled to Tasmania to graduate from his Diploma of Family History course, and to travel to Oatlands, where his great great grandmother (Sarah Crosby) lived briefly in 1850, working as a servant at an inn, the Wilmott Arms. The trip was interesting. Did Glenn just make his debut as a travel writer?

See the “Reflections on Experience” page for more information. This book is available for purchase on the Lulu website.

In February 2023 Glenn published Long Time Approaching: An Incomplete Memoir. See the “Reflections on Experience” page for more information.

A Brief History

Glenn Martin is a writer and sometime-poet. He has written over twenty-five books, across numerous topic areas. He wrote his first book in 1988, a history of Kyogle, the town where he lived in northern New South Wales. He also wrote a history of the Kyogle Public School in 1995. Both books were well-received in the local community.

Since coming back to Sydney in 1997, Glenn has written and published many books. Since he retired from the workforce (let’s say 2019), he has been free to carry out his projects unimpeded. There are several topic areas, but it always threatens to spread out further:

Ethics and values, the most recent book being A Foundation for Living Ethically.

Reflections on Experience”: these books draw on his experiences in work and living, and thinking and feeling. He trusts that they offer a coherent and hopeful perspective.

There are several volumes of poetry. These collections occur at long intervals, because it is another way of seeing, and not all of life can be expressed in logical propositions.

Family history is another stream of books. Glenn thought he came from an ordinary family. What he has learned from the hundreds of people he has discovered is that there is probably no such thinig as an ordinary family.

There came a new category in 2020: the “Big Picture”. The book was called FUTURE, and now (2025) there is a book about the I Ching, which also belongs here.

The video below shows all the books Glenn has written (well, up to 2022).

A Foundation for Living Ethically

Glenn’s latest book on ethics, in 2020 – a straightforward account of the possibility of living life ethically. This book presents a foundation for living an ethical life based on five core human values, beginning with the simple idea of ethics as consideration of the well-being of others.
