My purpose is to assist individuals and organisations to understand ethics and values and to act with high integrity, so that we may move along the path to becoming all that we may be.
The question that individuals and organisations may ask is this: if we devote time and energy (and money) to working on ethics and values, will it make us more successful? Well, there are no guarantees. However, working on ethics and values can be likened to improving the soil in a garden. It may not prevent a hail storm from coming and wiping out your garden, but it does make it a lot more likely you will grow healthier plants and have abundant crops.
Clarifying your values as an individual and an organisation, and then building a common commitment to high human values, is how you “improve the soil in the garden” of your organisation.
Organisations tend to look at negative events (e.g. embezzlements, sexual harassment) and try to reduce the risk of them occurring. Hence they introduce compliance training. But while such training is essential, it is not enough to ensure that employees will act properly.
Everyone needs to know what values the organisation is really serving. This means: what kinds of actions by employees are welcomed? And what kinds of actions are not tolerated?
This is old wisdom. Commentary from 3,000 years ago in the Chinese Book of Changes says, “Finally, the best way to combat evil is to make energetic progress in the good.”
